Introduction:

Product marking is an integral part of the supply chain, as it not only identifies the product but also provides consumers with important information. Among the many marking technologies, thermal transfer printing (TTO) stands out with its unique capabilities.

What is TTO (Thermal Transfer Overprint)?

TTO is a printing technology that uses heat to transfer ink from a thermal transfer ribbon directly onto packaging material (film, foil). This ensures high-quality marking on a wide range of materials.

A similar technology is used in standard label printers

How does the printhead work?

The printhead is a key element of the thermal transfer coder. It contains an array of miniature elements (pixels) that are heated independently. When in contact with a thermal ribbon, these elements transfer heat to the thermal transfer ribbon, causing the ink to transfer from the ribbon to the packaging. This technology allows for printing both simple texts and barcodes and complex high-resolution images.

Advantages of TTO printers:

  • Versatility: TTO works effectively on most flexible packaging materials, unlike laser printing, which is limited to certain types of surfaces.
  • Large print area and high resolution: TTO can apply detailed marking to packaging film, allowing for the elimination of labels when needed. This is something that CIJ (Continuous Inkjet) coders cannot boast of.
  • Flexibility in use: The technology is suitable for both continuous and intermittent packaging machines, expanding its application possibilities.
  • High print contrast: Ensures readability of small text and high-quality barcodes.
  • Easy integration: TTO can be easily integrated with enterprise management systems, allowing printing information directly from databases.

Comparison with using self-adhesive labels

Unlike self-adhesive labels, TTO allows for significant material savings by eliminating the need for labels. This not only reduces the cost of additional materials but also simplifies logistics and inventory management. In addition, using one type of film for different products with the ability to print specific information during packaging increases the flexibility of production lines. Additionally, TTO printers can be used for printing self-adhesive labels as part of print & apply systems, providing additional versatility in marking methods.

Applications of TTO coders:

  • Types of packaging machines where thermal transfer printers are installed:
    • Flow-wrappers
    • Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) machines
    • Horizontal Form Fill Seal (HFFS) machines
    • Thermoformers
    • Tray sealers
    • Fillers for bulk products
  • Types of packaging for thermal transfer printing:
    • Bags
    • Tray seals
    • Sachets
    • Vacuum packs
    • Labels
  • Product marking:
    • Chips
    • Nuts and grains
    • Candies
    • Powders
    • Fasteners
    • Bakery (bread, cookies, muffins)
    • Confectionery
    • Cheese
    • Processed meat products
    • Coffee
    • Beverages
    • Soups

TTO technology provides flexibility in production, allowing it to be used on various types of packaging and for a wide range of products. This ensures high-quality marking and efficiency in production processes.
